On stage, the Mezzo is usually either the mean enemy of a nice soprano, the mysterious woman to be killed by a tenor who can’t handle her or some gender-fluid baroque prince. That’s all very well and fun, but sometimes even Carmencita simply wants to be nice, merry, friendly and generous. Luckily, Flotow wrote just THAT part: Nancy, Martha’s rather practical best friend and Contralto-Soubrette ;).
